Kinky is an installation that explores questions of feminism, post-colonialism and the fashion industry. In this work, Mendes embroiders different words by hand onto pieces of cotton using real hair. The hair is extracted from wigs composed of hair of women originated from Africa, South America or Asia. Using pieces of hair, extracted from each wig, Mendes embroiders the same words that are used to sell them - one wig from Africa sells as ‘kinky’, from China ‘platinum’, blonde ‘charming’, Brazil ‘virgin’, etc.
